The increasing prevalence of eating disorders in Australia is causing devastating economic and social impact. According to Butterfly Foundation’s Paying the Price Report 2024, there are now 1.1 million people living with an eating disorder in Australia, a 21% increase since 2012. A staggering 27% of these individuals are aged 19 or younger.
Eating disorders impact almost every aspect of an individual’s life. Not only is there the devastating and potentially life-threatening impact on physical and mental health, people with eating disorders and their carers also often face financial challenges in accessing support and treatment.
This is a public health crisis, and Butterfly continually works to do everything it can to provide support services, treatment and prevention programs to those in need. Butterfly also advocates strongly for the voice of lived experience, reporting regularly to the media, government and health sectors to spread awareness, break down stigma and encourage help-seeking.
But sadly, there is always more that needs to be done to help those suffering from eating disorders and body image issues. The owners of Fairfax & Roberts have been personally impacted by an eating disorder in their family and have received invaluable support from Butterfly. The family recognises the importance of this foundation and supporting them to continue their ongoing work in this field and help change the lives of many Australians.
This emotional connection led to the partnership between Fairfax & Roberts and Butterfly Foundation. Together, Fairfax & Roberts and Butterfly have designed and crafted a necklace inspired by Butterfly’s logo - the blue butterfly. The butterfly symbolises hope, life and the ongoing transformative journey that is a part of everyone’s life from birth, but particularly for those who recover from an eating disorder. The wings, expressed as speech bubbles, reflect Butterfly’s commitment to change through meaningful, understanding, informed and persuasive conversations.
With each necklace sold, 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Butterfly to support and fund their ongoing work and help individuals and families who have been directly impacted by eating disorders and body image issues.
The Butterfly Necklace will be sold exclusively at the Fairfax & Roberts showroom or online here.
