A perfectly crafted engagement ring deserves to be presented to your loved one at a beautiful proposal. We sat down with Claire of Surprise Proposals by Claire to discuss engagement proposals and how to create a special and personal moment.
After over a decade in the industry, what are five things one should consider when planning an engagement proposal?
1. PERSONALISING YOUR PROPOSAL
I believe the number one thing to consider when planning a proposal is to make sure it's personal, sentimental and unique to each couple.
I once had a client who wanted to incorporate his ladies favourite Disney movie UP, into the proposal. We used vintage styling elements so it looked like the home of the old man in the movie. As well as arranging a huge bunch of balloons to recreate the classic scene. The gentleman wrote their memories and relationship milestones in a beautiful "our adventures" book, just like in the movie. It was incredibly romantic!
2. EMBRACING TRADITION
In Western culture, we ask for the parents blessing, get down on bended knee and place the ring on the left hand. Other cultures may have different traditions. Embracing what is culturally significant to you and your loved one is particularly important for this life-long commitment. I encourage men to do some research before the day if they aren't sure.
When considering the location of the proposal (public or private) I ask my clients to consider what best suits their personalities. This choice is an important one as we want to ensure everyone feels comfortable on the day so they can enjoy the experience.
4. PLANNING THE SPEECH
I do love it when the gentleman prepare a speech! Some men write palm cards or even read from their phone. There is no right or wrong in my opinion, it is as they say, the thought that counts. However, the proposal can be a nerve wracking moment so I understand why other men prefer to simply ask the question "Will you marry me?".
For the men who don't think they feel up to giving a speech, I offer to display love notes at the location, with their words of affection. Or encourage them to tell their loved one after the proposal, all the reasons why they want to spend their life with them.
Another important consideration is keeping it a surprise and taking her breath away when she least expects it!
These days, many ladies know the proposal is coming. They may have chosen the design of the ring, shopped around for the wedding dress or even booked the wedding venue. But they don't know when, where or how the proposal will take place and therin lies the surprise. Catching her off guard will add to the excitement and elation of the special day.
Keeping an engagement proposal a secret is always a challenge. What is your advice on how to make a proposal a surprise?
Depending on where proposal is, it is important to come up with the perfect ruse to get her there. Whether it be arranging a professional photo shoot, going to a fancy restaurant or pretending there is a special event to go to, it’s best to think of a ruse where she will be dressed up and feeling her best whilst keeping it a surprise.
Simple ways to make a proposal special are incorporating her favourite colours into the decorations and florals or playing her favourite song. Adding a personalised element like photos or video to display on the day are a beautiful way to showcase your memories together.
